The growing season of 1997 began with ideal spring weather, allowing the vines to set a full and healthy crop with plenty of ground moisture to sustain them through the season. The consistent summer pattern that followed allowed the abundant crop to come to full and even ripening, creating a classic vintage for the Napa Valley. This resulted in some of the grapes, harvested at Cain, to arrive at the highest sugar levels ever seen at the Winery. The result provided Cain with many sweet, rich wines from which to create the Cain Five blend. The wines display the depth, richness and nuances of each of the varietals used to create Cain Five. The exception, in this vintage, was that the Merlot was not seen as an asset to the blend and, therefore, was not used in the assemblage for the first time since the inception of Cain Five. The 1997 Napa Valley vintage has been heralded as one of the finest in recent years and the Cain Five displays all the characteristics of the bountiful year.
